St. Michael's Church was built in the ancient county of Soontagana as early as in the 13th century and is thus one of the oldest and most fascinating buildings in western Estonia. The church got its square bell tower in the 18th century, when also the underground tombs of the church were walled up. Inside the walls of the church yard is the old cemetery. The famous Henrik of Latvia, the author of the ancient chronicle (1180-1227) reflecting the Christianization of Estonia and Latvia and the ancient fight for freedom, was the first priest here.
